Sam & Max appeared in the comics before appearing anywhere else. Almost all of these have been reprinted in The collected Sam & Max: Surfin' the Highway.
[edit] Early comics
The comics that started it all. Made in the late eighties and early nineties in black-and-white, though some were later reprinted in color. The early comics are generally more grimy and violent than later incarnations, as well as less stylized.

A series of full-color single-page comics made for LucasArts' promotional magazine The Adventurer, loosely related to its then-recent games. Appeared from 1990 through 1996.

A series of short machinima videos using the engine from Sam & Max Season One. During the season's initial run three were released between each episode and the next, keeping fans busy on a weekly basis.

A 20-minute machinima video produced by Telltale Games to promote Ice Station Santa and their Sam & Max series in general, with largely the same plot as Ice Station Santa.

A two minute and twelve second long flash short that details the canon origin of General Skun'kape. However as stated by the creators at Telltale Games the events in this short will never be addressed in the actual Telltale Games series.

A graphic adventure game published by LucasArts in 1993.

A canceled action-adventure for the Xbox worked on by Infinite Machine in 2001-2002. Only after Infinite Machine went bankrupt did LucasArts reacquire the Sam & Max rights and announce Freelance Police (below).

A planned sequel to Hit the Road that was canceled in March 2004. The cancellation caused a big outcry among the public and eventually led to the creation of Telltale Games.
[edit] Sam & Max episodic series

After the cancellation of Freelance Police, the Sam & Max video game rights eventually reverted to Steve Purcell. Soon after, Sam & Max Season One was announced by Telltale Games, a company founded by former LucasArts employees. Sam & Max Season Two was later released. Season One was later renamed Save The World, Season Two was also renamed Beyond Time & Space, and the two seasons have come to Wii & XBox Live Arcade. Season 3, The Devil's Playhouse, was also released for PS3, PC & Max.
